Fall is the best walking season in San Jose. The summer heat eases, mornings turn crisp, and the late-afternoon light turns soft and golden. If you live between Willow Glen and Campbell, some of the best walks near Willow Glen and Campbell are just minutes from your front door.
Here are six of our favorites, organized by mood, so you can pick the one that fits your day.
1. When You Need a Little Nature: Los Gatos Creek Trail at the Campbell Ponds
This is the walk for clearing your head. The Los Gatos Creek Trail runs nearly 9.5 miles from Lexington Reservoir through Los Gatos, Campbell, and into San Jose. Our favorite stretch starts at Los Gatos Creek County Park in Campbell, where the path passes a series of ponds that draw herons, egrets, and ducks.
- Distance: Your choice. Walk 2 to 3 miles out and back, or continue south toward Vasona Lake for about 5.4 miles round trip.
- Parking: Los Gatos Creek County Park, 1250 Dell Avenue, Campbell. There is a vehicle entry fee, or you can pay hourly at the machine.
- Best time: Morning. Much of the trail is in full sun.
- Good to know: The path is paved, about 8 feet wide, and mostly flat, with benches along the way. It works well for strollers and wheelchairs. It is also popular with cyclists, so keep to the right. The park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset.
Closer to home: The same trail continues north past the Pruneyard and through Willow Glen, ending at Meridian Avenue, with access points near Bascom and Leigh Avenues. It is an easy option when you only have 30 minutes.
2. When You Want Coffee and a Little Window Shopping: Downtown Willow Glen
Downtown Willow Glen feels like a small town tucked inside a big city. The heart of it is Lincoln Avenue between Willow Street and Minnesota Avenue: a tree-lined stretch of sidewalk cafés, independent boutiques, bakeries, and restaurants. The City of San José even features it in its Shop Local SJ series.
- Distance: About 1 mile if you walk the full stretch and back. Add the side streets to find smaller shops.
- Parking: Free street parking plus public lots just off Lincoln.
- Best time: Weekday late mornings, or weekend mornings before brunch crowds arrive. Golden hour is lovely too.
- Good to know: Start at Willow Glen Town Square at Lincoln and Willow, where the plaza fountain makes a nice spot to sit with your coffee before you set off.
3. When It’s Sunday Morning: Downtown Campbell and the Farmers Market
Few things feel more like fall than wandering a farmers market with a warm drink in hand. The Campbell Farmers Markethas been named one of the best in Silicon Valley, with local produce, flowers, food vendors, crafts, and live music.
- Distance: About 1 mile around downtown. Want more? The Los Gatos Creek Trail starts right by the Downtown Campbell light rail station, so you can easily add a creekside stretch.
- Parking: Public lots around downtown, including near the light rail station at Orchard City Drive and Railway Avenue.
- Best time: Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., along East Campbell Avenue between Central Avenue and Third Street. Go before 11 if you prefer smaller crowds.
- Good to know: The market runs year round, rain or shine. Bring a tote bag for fall squash, apples, and flowers.
Mark your calendar: Campbell Oktoberfest takes over downtown on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18. It is free, with German food, live music on four stages, and more than 100 arts and crafts booths. The farmers market typically takes Oktoberfest Sunday off, so plan your produce run for another weekend.
4. When You Want a Full Afternoon Out: Vasona Lake and Oak Meadow
This is the most “day trip” walk on the list, and it is perfect when friends or family are visiting. Vasona Lake County Parkhas a lakeside path, big shade trees, and picnic spots. Next door at Oak Meadow Park, there is a carousel and the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, a miniature train that runs through both parks.
- Distance: An easy loop around the lake. For a longer walk, start in downtown Los Gatos and follow the creek trail to Vasona, about 3.9 miles round trip with a gentle 127-foot climb.
- Parking: Main park entrance at 333 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos. There is a vehicle entry fee. Walk-in entrances are on Garden Hill Drive and University Avenue.
- Best time: Morning or late afternoon. Much of the loop is sunny.
- Good to know: The park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset.
5. When You Want Something Beautiful and Slow: San Jose Municipal Rose Garden

Most people visit the Rose Garden in May, but it stays colorful well into fall. The 5.5-acre San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, once a prune orchard, holds more than 4,000 rose shrubs and nearly 200 varieties, with blooms from April through November. It is free, peaceful, and one of San Jose’s true local treasures.
- Distance: Short. Wander the garden, then stroll the surrounding Rose Garden neighborhood if you want more.
- Parking: Street parking nearby. The closest lot is at the Rose Garden Branch Library.
- Best time: Late afternoon, when the light is warm and the garden is quiet.
- Good to know: The garden is at Naglee and Dana Avenues and opens daily at 8 a.m. Bring a blanket and a snack. The lawn under the redwoods is a lovely place to sit for a while.
6. When You Want a Quiet Evening Wind-Down: Willow Glen’s Side Streets
Sometimes the best walk has no destination. The residential streets around downtown Willow Glen are shady and quiet, lined with older homes and mature trees that start to turn as fall settles in.
- Distance: 1 to 2 miles. Make your own loop.
- Parking: Park near Lincoln Avenue and wander out from there.
- Best time: The hour before sunset.
- Good to know: Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, and sunset comes around 5 p.m. soon after. Bring a small flashlight or wear something reflective.
A Few Simple Fall Walking Tips
- Dress in layers. Fall mornings can be cool, but afternoons often still feel like summer.
- Bring water and sunscreen, even when it does not feel hot.
- Check the air quality before longer walks. AirNow.gov is an easy place to look.
- On shared trails, stay right and listen for cyclists coming up behind you.
- Keep a tote bag in your car. You never know when a farmers market or bakery will call your name.
