PLUM ORCHARD’S GUIDE TO APARTMENT LIVING #5 – 10 Fall Decorating Ideas for Your Apartment

We love change. We love the way autumn changes the leaves on the trees, giving them brilliant hues of reds, oranges, and yellows. We also love to see different things in our homes during every season. During the summer months, the indoor aesthetics are typically very light and breezy so that you can enjoy being indoors without it feeling like you’re suffocating. We love to go darker and heavier in the autumn with our decorating choices because it helps make us feel cozy and at home. If you want a few ideas of how you can spruce up your living space during the fall season, then check out these tips below!

1. Bring in the fall colors

We start this list with one of our favorite things about autumn: the beautiful hues of reds, oranges, and yellows left behind by the leaves after they have fallen from their branches during the windy weeks of September and October. You can brighten up the drab look of your living space by adding these beautiful colors to it. You can do this in a variety of ways. For example, you may grab some autumn-colored table runners and drape them over your couches or bring in some leaves themselves if they are fake ones to make your room look more lively. If you’re feeling brave enough, then you can bring in some red bricks and lay them around to give your place that autumn feel.

2. Add some fall scents into the air

When decorating our living space with colors, we sometimes forget to add in small touches of smells. Autumn is the time to bring in some scents from nature. One of the great things about autumn is that we finally get to light our scented candles again, and we recommend decorating your home with them as well. We love lighting up the pumpkin spice candle during the early hours of fall to help give off a cozy and inviting spiciness throughout our apartment. You can either make your pumpkin spice candle or buy one online to give off a rich and spicy scent that will remind you of falling leaves and baking pies. We also like to use the autumn scents in our home during Thanksgiving time because they make us feel at home.

3. Bring in the harvest

If you’re lucky enough to live in an area where there are lots of farms, then autumn is the time when local farmers will start bringing in their harvests. You can take part in this by using fruits and vegetables as decor for your living space. We love placing apples, pumpkins, and corn around our home to give it a rustic and farmhouse feel. There are many pumpkin farms in the area – take a look and a lovely weekend stroll while enjoying the outdoors!

4. Add in some seasonal decor

There are plenty of stores that sell autumn-themed decorations that you can use to decorate your apartment. For example, you could bring in large vases full of red and yellow flowers, or if those aren’t your thing, then you could pick up some fake branches and place them around your apartment. If you’re feeling crafty, then we recommend turning the branches into DIY wall hangings for a personal touch.

5. Get cozy with blankets and pillows

This is the time of year where we all want to stay indoors as much as possible because of how chilly it gets during late October, November, and December. You can help make your space more comfortable by bringing in blankets, throws, and pillows with autumn prints on them.

6. Get creative with pumpkins

The pumpkin is one of the most important symbols of autumn, so why not take advantage of this fact? We love decorating our home with different pumpkins that you can either paint, carve or place in vases to help give your home that autumn feel. There are many different ways to use pumpkins during the autumn months, so get creative with them!

7. Enjoy seasonal food

You should always decorate your living space with items you love, and for us, that means bringing in delicious foods into our apartment to help give it that autumn feeling. One of our favorite things to bring in during this season is pumpkin pie because not only does it taste amazing, but it looks so good on display. If you don’t feel like baking, pick one up at Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville. While picking season might be over, their pie shop and deli are still open!

8. Add some old fashion charm

If you’re not one to decorate your apartment with modern pieces, then autumn is a great time to do so. We love picking up vintage objects and placing them around our home during this season because they remind us of falling leaves and the good ol’ days when life was simple. You can use these to decorate your side tables, kitchen counters, or shelves for rustic autumn feel that you just can’t get enough of. If you like to browse and have some time on your hands, visit Montebello Road on 2045 S. Bascom Avenue in Campbell, just a 5-minute drive from Plum Orchard Apartments.

9. Add some books to your bookcase

Every autumn, we go back to reading the same old books that remind us of late nights spent drinking tea and looking out our windows at falling leaves. We recommend adding these classics into your bookcase for a more autumn feel. You can also buy new editions or place them around your home to give it that homey and classic feel.
