The Essential Moving Timeline and Checklist for a Successful Move to Your New Rental Apartment

Player

Moving to a new place does not have to be a stressful experience if you plan ahead and stay organized throughout the process. Follow this timeline and checklist to help ensure a smooth and successful move to your new rental apartment.

Six to Eight Weeks Before Your Move

Get organized and start packing nonessential items. Begin purging any things you no longer need or want. Throw away broken items and donate unwanted belongings to charity. This will make packing and unpacking much easier and less stressful. It is beneficial to start with things you do not use regularly. The earlier you start, the less stress you will feel as the move date approaches.

Start collecting packing supplies. Boxes, tape, markers, and bubble wrap can be purchased from most hardware or home goods stores. If you know people who have recently moved, they may also have some supplies they are willing to give or sell to you.

Four to Six Weeks Before Your Move:

Create a budget for your move. Determine how much you are willing to spend on professional movers, rental trucks, or storage units. Get quotes from different companies to compare prices. Finalize moving plans and arrangements. This includes reserving a moving truck or hiring movers, transferring utilities, and notifying friends and family of your new address. Ensure to read the move-in instructions you received at your new place, so you have all utilities set up, deposits paid, and Internet and TV connections arranged.

Sort through what remains and pack the items you will need in the coming weeks. This may include seasonal clothes, important documents, and kitchen supplies. Pack heavier items on the bottom of your boxes and label each box with its contents.

Two to Four Weeks Before Your Move:

Pack the remaining items and complete any necessary paperwork. Start cleaning your apartment, so you can leave it in good condition for your landlord and get your deposit back. Start dreaming about how you’ll set up your furniture in your new apartment – think about where it’ll fit and what kinds of decorations or plants you might like to add when the move is complete.

One Week Before Your Move:

Make sure you have all your belongings accounted for and packed safely. Be ready to instruct your movers on how to handle any fragile items. Confirm the details of your moving plans. If you’re moving on your own or with the help of friends, plan ahead of time, so your move doesn’t drag out all day and into the wee hours. Remember that friends, movers, and yourself might get hungry or thirsty throughout the day – pick up some sandwiches or look for a pizza place nearby to keep everybody energized and happy!

Day of the Move:

Follow through with all planned activities and make sure nothing is forgotten. Get an early start and take breaks as needed to avoid getting overwhelmed. Be sure to supervise the loading and unloading of your belongings, especially any fragile items. Inspect your new apartment for damage and immediately report any issues to your landlord. Maybe have a bottle of cold prosecco ready for a toast when all is done and you’ve moved in! And then it’s time to get onto your next task – unpacking :)
